A 30-year-old man was arrested for the April 6 murder of a nurse in his neighbourhood.
Her body was found in a gunny bag at a vacant plot near the Koyambedu vegetable market in Chennai.
The victim, Velvizhi, lived near Ajith and his wife Mahalakshmi’s flat at Choolaimedu area. Mahalakshmi and Velvizhi worked as nurses at a homecare centre, while Ajith was a driver in the same company. However he lost his job but pretended that he had got another job.
When Mahalakshmi asked for his salary, he visited Velvizhi and tried to borrow money and her gold chain but she refused. An angry Ajith strangulated Velvizhi and tied her body in a sack that he later transported to Koyambedu in an auto-rickshaw. He pawned the chain, escaped to Kerala and returned only after a police summons.
Police acted based on the complaint of Velvizhi’s father. The body was later recovered.
In a similar incident, Alam Bhai, a mason from Kolkatta, was arrested for murdering an elderly couple at their third-floor apartment at Taramani also in Chennai. He had reportedly attacked them for payment arrears. The couple owned several properties and had three adult children who lived in other parts of Chennai.
