The UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) has expressed gratitude to Qatar for donating $50mn to the agency during the extraordinary ministerial meeting to support UNRWA, which was held in Rome on March 15.
Speaking on Wednesday during a press conference in Gaza, UNRWA Commissioner General Pierre Krahenbuhl thanked Qatar for the generous donation and called on other countries to follow in the footsteps of Doha to support its services for more than 5mn Palestinian refugees.
On Friday, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres expressed his thanks and gratitude to His Highness the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani for Qatar's pledge to donate $50mn to UNRWA.
Doha's donation is the biggest among pledges offered by donor states that participated in the extraordinary conference.
Meanwhile, Krahenbuhl highlighted that humanitarian conditions in Gaza are witnessing serious and dramatic deterioration, stressing the difficult situations that people are going through and the unprecedented psychological pressures on people as well as serious damage to the health sector.
The UN official said it is time to make a serious move to deal with the consequences of the siege and occupation in Gaza and end the division due to its disastrous implications on the ground.
He added that UNRWA has been a witness to the historical wrongdoing that refugees have been going through and will tirelessly fight for their rights and needs.
Krahenbuhl said the deficit in UNRWA's budget must be secured through serious work, adding that the additional $100mn that were paid to the organisation constitute a good step but are not enough.
He said the agency is taking all the necessary measures to protect the mandate given to it by the United Nations.
