The Ministry of Economy and Commerce (MEC) has registered a violation against one of the major suppliers of fruits and vegetables for selling Egyptian oranges as Turkish, the official Qatar News Agency reported.

In a statement, the MEC said it found out that Egyptian orange was being exported to Turkey, where it got repackaged before being exported to Qatar as 'Turkish' orange.
The statement notes that such action is in clear violation of the consumer protection law, which obliges the supplier to clearly state the origin of the product and other information such as its nutritional values.
The violation was detected during an inspection campaign at the central vegetable and fruits market in Abu Hamour, Doha. The campaign was conducted in a bid to monitor the compliance of suppliers with their obligations under Law No 8 of 2008 on Consumer Protection, the MEC said.
The initiative comes within the framework of the ministry’s efforts to monitor markets and commercial activities as well as to crack down on price manipulation and uncover violations in a bid to protect consumer rights, the statement adds.
