FIFA President Gianni Infantino has called for concerted efforts by all Gulf countries to make World Cup Qatar 2022 a success, adding that the tournament is for all countries in the region, not only Qatar.
Speaking on the sidelines of the FIFA Executive Committee meeting in Oman, Infantino said that the 2022 FIFA World Cup will be held in Qatar four years later, and there is no disagreement in this matter at all.
The FIFA president said he was very pleased to see all the countries participate in the 23rd Arabian Gulf Cup in Kuwait, adding that Gulf Cup has become a model for its great role in bringing people closer.
Infantino praised the excellent hosting of the FIFA Executive Committee meeting by the Sultanate of Oman, which reflects its capabilities and potential to be a regional incubator and centre for the most important sports events.
The FIFA president said that the meeting discussed a number of important topics such as the future of the FIFA World Cup, and the 2026 World Cup, which will witness the participation of 48 teams for the first time, pointing out that FIFA is preparing for the organisation of a global women's football league in the coming period.
The meeting also discussed the idea of merging the U-17 World Cup with the U-20 World Cup, increasing the number of participating teams and organising the tournament annually instead of holding it once every two years.
