Some construction workers living on the northern fringes of Doha have suggested that mobile health clinics could be operated in the Umm Salal area.
These and other expatriates have been seeking the establishment of a workers’ health centre “somewhere in the Umm Salal municipal area” for long, it is found.
There has been a “significant” rise in the number of expatriate workers in the area owing to the rapid and large-scale construction work going on there over the past 4-5 years.
Work on a number of new roads and other infrastructure development projects has also been reported from places surrounding Umm Salal, and more projects are expected in the coming years as well, according to sources.
Workers, mainly residents of labour accommodation units in the area, have long been demanding the setting up of a workers’ health centre there as they need to travel either to Al Khor or Mesaimeer to meet their health requirements.
To do so, they say considerable time is consumed to reach either centre and hence they are asking for a workers’ medical centre in the Umm Salal area.
It has been reported that “no less than 30,000 workers” are staying in the camps in Umm Salal, Khartiyat and their neighbouring areas. More workers’ camps are relocating to such places because of the better and cheaper availability of land there.
