Qatar’s permanent representative to the United Nations HE Sheikha Alia Ahmed bin Saif al-Thani said the Doha Regional Dialogue on Sustaining Peace has come as part of the country’s efforts to support the president of UN General Assembly in his endeavour to nurture the process of peace building and sustainability across the world and especially the region.
Presiding over the opening session of the two-day meeting yesterday in Doha, she recalled that the Qatari delegation to the UN had held deliberations with some of the active entities on the possibility of establishing a regional dialogue for sustainable peace.
An agreement has been reached on the importance of such an initiative.
Describing the regional dialogue as an opportunity to develop local efforts aimed at achieving sustainable peace through the participation of the global community, Sheikha Alia said such efforts could go a long way in promoting open dialogues between affected parties and civil society organisations at different levels.
While lauding the efforts of non-governmental organisations, she said they are playing a key role as an effective force to ensure that the needs and requirements of women and the interests of young people are effectively addressed.
Sheikha Alia reiterated Qatar’s long-term interest in building and sustaining peace by looking at the root causes and supporting mediation efforts to achieve it.
She asserted that the country’s recent efforts made it crystal clear that it has been working for peace, safety, development, and above all human rights.
Mexico’s Permanent Representative to the UN Juan Jose Gomez, assistant secretary general and co-ordinator for peace and security reforms at the UN Secretariat Tamrat Samuel, UN undersecretary general Noeleen Heyzer and undersecretary general and United Nations Development Programme associate administrator Tegegnework Gettu also spoke at the inaugural session.
New York University’s Centre on International Co-operation director Sarah Cliffe and the Center for Conflict and Humanitarian Studies Doha director Dr Sultan Barakat were the moderators.
