Poland has smashed an international fraudster gang after arresting 48 Taiwanese and two Poles who extorted some €1.8mn ($2.3mn) in a year from Chinese nationals, prosecutors said on Thursday.
The gang would call victims pretending to be from the local police and demand urgent money transfers, warning that they would otherwise face a tax investigation into their affairs.
Police on Thursday searched five villas near Warsaw, Krakow and Lublin and questioned two gang leaders, one a Polish woman.
Those arrested face up to 15 years in prison.
