The Darfur refugee football team visited the International Centre for Sport Security headquarters in Doha this week to meet with senior officials and international experts from Save the Dream – the global non-profit movement that aims to promote and protect sports values in young people around the world.
Comprising players and officials from different tribes and camps across Sudan, the Darfur refugee football team was formed to provide opportunities to support and empower displaced youth in the country, as well as use sport as a platform to promote peace following years of conflict and civil war in Sudan.
During the meeting, officials from Save the Dream discussed a number of potential sports projects and areas of mutual interest with the Sudanese delegation – which included officials, coaches and players – as well as how technical assistance can be provided by Save the Dream in the field of sports development and peace-building.
In addition, players and officials from the Darfur refugee team learnt about various projects and volunteer programmes currently being conducted around the world by Save the Dream, its overall mission and core values that aim to educate and empower young people through sports, as well as how the global movement plans to continue to expand its work in Qatar and around the world in 2018.
Speaking at the meeting, Massimiliano Montanari, executive director of Save the Dream, said: “This meeting was an important opportunity to learn and share experiences about the important role that sports can play in empowering young people, as well as ongoing projects and initiatives being conducted by both organisations.
“At Save the Dream, we are committed to sharing our expertise and providing technical assistance to organisations like the Darfur refugee football team, who are playing an active and vital role in using sports as a platform for peace and youth empowerment in Sudan.”
