The Tamu Society Qatar (TSQ) celebrated their festival of Khee Losar recently at Al Dana Driving School. Loshar marks the New Year of the indigenous Tamu community, or Gurungs, of Nepal. The festival falls on the 15th of Poush in the Nepalese calendar (December/January).
The programme was chaired by Ras Gurung, President of Tamu Society Qatar, and Hari Aryal, Second Secretary at the Embassy of Nepal, was the chief guest. During the programme, Tamu men were spotted wearing bhangra and kachhad. Women were seen wearing maroon velvet ghaleks (blouses) with ornaments. More than 300 Nepali expatriates participated.
The cultural show was the main attraction. Nepali Gurung film actor and model Rajani Gurung, actor Mangali, folk singer Gagan Gurung and Debika KC were the headline performers at the evening. Moreover, dozens of other Doha-based artistes also performed at the programme.
Actress, dancer and model Rajani Gurung performed two dances. Gagan Gurung performed three songs. Mangali performed a comic piece, while Debika KC performed a single from her latest album.
The artistes of Tamu Cultural Group performed a dance to a song titled “Lau Aayo Loshar” (Here Comes Loshar). They also performed the traditional dance of Tamu Selo.
Traditional cuisine was served on the occasion, which included sel roti (rice flour donuts) and achaar (spicy pickles).
