Bollywood singing sensation Sonu Nigam is all set to perform in Doha on January 19 when he will perform at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Centre as a part of the upcoming second edition of Shop Qatar Festival.
The singer’s concert is organised by Talent Resources as part of the Bollywood Week during Shop Qatar, the country’s biggest shopping festival, to be held from January 7 to February 7, 2018 under the slogan ‘A Brand New Tradition’.
Rahat Mansoor, who runs Talent Resource, told Community, “This is going to be the second concert of the singer in Qatar. His earlier show was a great success. The expatriate communities from South Asian countries cherished the music presented by Sonu last time.”
“We are bringing him again to Doha. The singer is well known and loved in the subcontinent. Sonu’s indie and Bollywood songs are extremely popular. He is also a good composer. His popularity has led us to invite him to Qatar for the expatriates living here. The government of Qatar has been promoting tourism with the slogan of Qatar welcomes the world. The Shop Qatar Festival provides us a good opportunity to invite singers, artists, and fashion designers,’ she said.
Rahat added, “At Doha Exhibition and Convention Centre, there is enough capacity to hold the concert of a popular singer like Sonu Nigam. We are expecting over 7,000 people. Tickets in different categories are available. Price of tickets for the VIP category is QR1,000, for platinum QR350, for gold QR200, for silver QR100, and the price for regular category is QR50. The South Asian expatriates living in Qatar are going to have fun.
The gate for the concert will be opened at 5.30pm and the show will start at 7.30pm. The concert will last for about three hours.”
The singer has mainly been singing in Hindi and Kannada languages and films. However, Sonu has also sung in Bengali, Gujarati, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Tulu, Assamese, Odia, Nepali, and Maithili languages. He has also released Indian pop albums and acted in a number of films. He is considered one of the highest paid Indian singers.
The Qatar Shop Festival, organised by Qatar Tourism Authority will include a series of nation-wide promotion offers, discounts, entertainment and public celebrations. Besides shopping, the festival will have fashion shows and cultural performances.
Earlier media reports have said that the festival will celebrate three different weeks. The first week will be Arabian Week. This week will focus on activities related to Arab world. It will present Arab culture, arts, and musical performances. The week will also have Arabian fashion shows and workshops by make-up artists such as Hanan al-Najada. The make-up workshop will offer certified courses and tutorial classes.
The second week will be Bollywood Week. This week will offer programmes and shows related to art and culture from India.
There will be fashion shows highlighting dresses prepared in India and in other South Asian countries. The programmes include presentation on how to make bangles and how to have embroidery on clothes. However, the main event of the week will be the Sonu Nigam concert.
The third week will be International Week. In this week international brands will be showcased and cultural events from different countries will be held.
The main event will be a concert by the band The Chainsmokers, a make-up masterclass by Joyce Bonelli, and fashion design class with Alejandro Resta.
The inaugural edition of Shop Qatar ended on February 7, 2017 after 60 shoppers won raffle draws for cash prizes ranging from QR10,000 to QR1mn.
The period in which the festival was held witnessed a 16.8% increase in visitor arrivals, compared to the same period in 2016.
QTA introduced the annual shopping festival following the notable growth of Qatar’s retail sector, matched by its strong contribution to tourism spending.
