HE the Minister of Culture and Sports Salah bin Ghanem bin Nasser al-Ali said that celebrating the National Day was a chance to reflect on the past and use its lessons to help the country have a prosperous future.
HE the Minister said that choosing the quote of His Highness the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani ‘Promise of Prosperity and Glory’ as the slogan for this year’s celebrations reflects the hope for a better future so long as the people believe in the wise vision of their leadership and their abilities to overcome challenges. He added that the quote was a pledge to citizens and residents alike, who all managed to face bravely the unjust siege.
HE the Minister said that this year’s celebrations come amidst an unjust siege, which citizens and residents both faced gracefully in a well-principled manner. HE the Minister stressed that the siege was a boost to all innovators in Qatar as it became the perfect environment to unleash the innovating power in all fields.
HE the Minister said that all segments of society realise their role in responding to the challenges of the period, which starts with support the wise vision of the leadership in dealing with the crisis. He highlighted that the political leadership gave a lesson in political diplomacy during the crisis, and remained committed to the independence and sovereignty of Qatar.
HE the Minister noted that the leadership in times of crisis set the stage for a new phase of development as it provoked a spirit of initiative and innovation, as well as openness on new foreign markets. It also helped support strategic ties with friendly countries that respect the Qatari people.
Al-Ali noted that there were many benefits gained from the siege, the most important of which was focusing on self-sufficiency. He added that the siege allowed Qataris and residents to rethink many of the notions that were standing in the way of the country’s development.
The Ministry of Culture and Sports celebrated many achievements in 2017. It launched a number of cultural centres across the countries for different fields such as poetry, theatre, and music. Along with Qatar Museums Authority, they celebrated the Qatar-Germany cultural year.
The ministry also organised the Doha International Book Fair and supporting five new publishing houses that will look to promote the work of Qatari writers.
