Qatar University (QU) is discussing with the Ministry of Public Health and Hamad Medical Corporation the possibility of building a new hospital, the QU president has said.
“Qatar University is committed to equipping its College of Medicine with the best facilities. The proposed hospital will provide students clinical training in the near future,” said Dr Hassan al-Derham while speaking at the second annual white coat ceremony of  the Qatar University College of Medicine (QU-CMED).
At the event, 73 second-year medical students took the College of Medicine Student Oath and donned the symbolic white coat in front of an audience of more than 260 invited guests and well-wishers.
The event aimed to celebrate the second-year medical students who successfully completed their transition year and entered the Medicine programme. It is designed to acknowledge the students’ commitment to the profession and reassert values of compassion, professionalism, and dedication to patient care, as they enter the medical profession.
Attendees included QU vice president, Medical and Health Sciences and CMED dean Dr Egon Toft, Qatar Centre for Organ Transplantation director and Hamad General Hospital’s medical director Dr Yousef al-Maslamani, as well as QU officials and CMED students and their families, faculty and staff.
Dr al-Derham said: “We, at Qatar University, are committed to equipping our students with the necessary skills to become highly effective physicians in line with the best international standards. This medical oath is a commitment that you, as students, take upon yourselves from now and forever. I wish our students all the best in their medical studies.”
Dr Toft said: “Today marks an important transition for the new students into the medical profession and underlines the level of their commitment to making great strides in their future career goals. I encourage you to become lifelong learners in your role as providers of optimum healthcare to your community. This symbolic event is just the beginning of a long journey that will open you to a wide range of opportunities that will ready you to contribute to advancing the health and welfare of the Qatari society.”
Dr al-Maslamani gave a lecture, in which he welcomed the new students who will start their training at HMC hospitals. He pointed to the role of trained physicians in helping the new students to join the workplace and achieve success.
