Atul Khatri, one of top Indian stand-up comedians, is coming to Qatar. He will perform at Radisson Blu hotel in December.
The live comedy show is being arranged by Top Hat Entertainment. It will be the second show arranged by the group, following its first-ever show in Qatar with Amit Tandon, another leading Indian stand-up comedian, in October. Details of the time and date are yet to be confirmed by the organisers.
Talking to Community, Rashmi Kotriwala, founder of Top Hat Entertainment, said, “The success of our first show with Amit Tandon was awesome. It has encouraged us to present more comedy shows to the lively expatriate communities of Qatar. The response of the audience was great. They loved watching and listening to Amit. I never saw over 500 happy faces under one roof. Amit also enjoyed the show as the audience was too absorbed with him.”
She added, “We are excited to be able to bring another ace event to Doha. Atul is an artist par excellence. We have worked together before and we can promise another fantastic evening for the Doha residents.”
When asked how Atul is different from Amit, Rashmi said, “Atul is also a stand-up comedian but he is different. He is more satirical. He cracks ironical jokes about politics in India. Amit’s focus has been on the family life of middle class Indians. Atul also focuses on Indian urban life, business communities and life in Mumbai in his jokes and satire.”
She added, “He is rated among the top Indian comedians by CNN-IBN. He is part of East India Comedy (EIC). He is a former businessman who got into comedy late in his life so that he could tick it off his own bucket list.”
She added, “Atul, born in Mumbai in 1968, obtained Bachelor of Engineering degree. He also attained a Certificate in Business Administration from the Manchester Business School, University of Manchester in the UK. His mother’s family hails from Karachi in Pakistan. After completing his education, he joined his family-run computer business.”
“At the age of 43, Atul became a comedian while still being engaged in his business. He has done over 400 comedy shows, television advertisement and YouTube videos. He was also one of the three finalists at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival held in Delhi in 2012,” Rashmi said.
She noted, “He also performs at The Comedy Store, The Canvas Laugh Factory and with East India Comedy. He has performed in San Francisco for a fundraiser organised by American India Foundation “
About how he became a comedian, Rashmi quoted Atul as saying, “It was midlife crisis and also to attempt to buy solitaire diamond earrings for my wife in this lifetime. It is a myth that comedians get women easily because they find funny men attractive. Unfortunately, all the girls who come up to me after a show and tell me I’m funny also call me uncle.”
Rashmi further said, “Atul’s style of comedy is rather satirical and comes with a perspective of a Sindhi businessman of Mumbai. His jokes are for a slightly mature audience. He does not believe in mincing words and his jokes come straight from his experiences as a 45-year-old living an urban busy life.”
Two other comedians from Doha will perform in the beginning of the show: Subeer Josh, an Indian expatriate, and Saad Khan, a Pakistani expatriate born and brought up in Qatar.
Subeer has handled both the business world and entertainment with equal passion and keenness.
Saad has formed a local group of comedians in Qatar. He is also known as the “Khan of Comedy”. He started doing comedy when he was selected as one of the winners of a stand-up comedy competition by Ahmed Ahmed, a well-known Egyptian American comedian, to perform alongside him in Qatar.
