Qatar and Turkey opened a new chapter in their historic relations on Wednesday during the landmark visit of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to Doha which culminated in the signing of 14 agreements and memoranda of understanding in various fields.
The highlight of the visit was His Highness the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani and President Erdogan presiding over the third session of the Qatar-Turkey Supreme Strategic Committee in Doha.
Qatar-Turkey Supreme Strategic Committee was established under the leadership of the Emir and the Turkish president to act as an important mechanism for strengthening bilateral relations between Qatar and Turkey in all fields. Through joint meetings of the committee, the best ways to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries are explored. The committee has played a major and catalytic role in the development of economic relations between the two countries since its inception. The committee meetings resulted in more qualitative relations between the two countries, which opened new horizons for co-operation between them at the official level and between businessmen and investors as well as economic, commercial and industrial institutions in both countries.
The bilateral co-operation between Qatar and Turkey is a shining example of strategic partnership in the region. This strategic partnership has been exemplified by Turkey’s unequivocal support to Qatar throughout the Gulf crisis.
His Highness the Emir took the opportunity to thank Erdogan for his country’s unstinted support for Qatar during the ongoing unjust siege.
Qatar recognises and appreciates Turkey’s key role in alleviating the impacts of this unjust siege.
Qatar will never forget Turkey’s stance against the siege, just as Turkey will not forget Qatar’s position rejecting the failed military coup that targeted Turkey’s stability and democracy in July 2016.
The Qatari-Turkish relations are based on a solid foundation with a strong desire to open new channels of co-operation in various fields.
The relations between the two countries and between His Highness the Emir and Erdogan are worthy of emulation by other countries and their leaders.
During the last two years, His Highness the Emir and President Erdogan have met several times, reflecting the depth of the Qatari-Turkish relations. It may be recalled that Erdogan – in a gesture of appreciation to Qatar – chose Doha to be the first Arab country to visit after his election and inauguration as president of Turkey in August 2014.
Of special significance is the activation of the joint Security Agreement between Qatar and Turkey, which prevented the escalation of the Gulf crisis. History will remember that Turkey prevented the crisis from blowing into a military crisis.
During his latest visit, Erdogan took the opportunity to visit the Turkish military detachment in Doha on Wednesday.  President Erdogan reaffirmed the readiness of the Turkish forces to co-operate with their Qatari counterparts.
President Erdogan has shown his courage and wisdom in dealing with the Gulf crisis through his insistence on justice and his support for Kuwaiti mediation to find a solution that preserves Qatar’s sovereignty and independence.
