Back in the mid-2000s when Shah Rukh Khan could do no wrong, the movie that added a feather onto a cap already brimming with feathers was Om Shanti Om. It also made Deepika Padukone into a household name and reinforced Shah Rukh as the King Khan of Bollywood.
Last week, the tenth anniversary of the movie’s release was celebrated and it was interesting in how the lives of the people involved in it have changed. Deepika now occupies the crest of Bollywood as its leading heroine. Shah Rukh meanwhile is the struggler. Farah Khan, the director, was at the time one of his closest friends. She then fell out with him and made Tees Maar Khan with Akshay Kumar which was a flop.
Subsequently, she returned to the Shah Rukh camp and the two delivered yet again a hit in the 2014 release, Happy New Year. Even though the movie was far from as iconic as Om Shanti Om, it gave a new lease to their careers. And as Shah Rukh flounders at present with back to back flops, one can’t but help feeling that what he needs is perhaps one more movie with Farah to recreate the Om Shanti Om magic.
