The Indian embassy in Qatar yesterday held a function to mark National Unity Day (Rashtriya Ekta Diwas) of the country, which commemorates the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
Ambassador P Kumaran paid tributes to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and recollected his extraordinary works towards unity and integrity of the country, as First Home Minister of India and Deputy Prime Minister. He said that he can be rightly called as one of the founding fathers of the Republic of India.
Sardar’s role in integrating more than 500 independent princely states in 1947 to 1949 from the British rule through the Independence Act 1947 was praised. He said that the “National Unity Day will provide an opportunity to re-affirm the inherent strength and resilience of our nation to withstand the actual and potential threats to the unity, integrity and security of our country.”
The ambassador also administered a pledge on the occasion. The event ended with the screening of a documentary on the life and achievements of Sardar Patel.
