His Highness the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani concluded a two-day state visit to Malaysia yesterday, a trip, which was described as "an important turning point in the relations between the two countries" by the King of Malaysia.
The Emir attended a dinner banquet hosted by the King of Malaysia Sultan Muhammad V, in his honour and the accompanying delegation, at the Royal Istana Negara Palace in Kuala Lumpur.
In a welcome speech, the King of Malaysia welcomed the Emir and the accompanying delegation, stressing that the visit represented an important turning point in the relations between Malaysia and Qatar.
The king underlined the significant importance of the visit in strengthening relations between the two countries, which have witnessed over the past years many mutual visits and talks at the highest level as well as the private sector and the people. He said the brotherly relations between Qatar and Malaysia have deepened over the past 43 years, based on shared positions in religion, unity and solidarity among Islamic countries. He also hailed the development in the trade relations between the two countries.
Describing the Emir's visit as historic, the king hoped it will open up new horizons of mutual cooperation and coordination, especially in the economic and trade fields.
His Highness the Emir expressed sincere appreciation for the welcome speech made by the King , stressing his keenness on promoting and developing brotherly relations between the two countries in various fields.
The Emir underlined that this visit, which witnessed the signing of several cooperation agreements and memorandums of understanding in addition to the Qatari-Malaysian businessmen forum, will contribute to strengthening the relations for the good of the two brotherly peoples.
His Highness the Emir said that the talks with the King and the Prime Minister affirmed the compatibility of views between the two countries on various regional and international issues, especially the joint determination to strengthening cooperation between the two countries in international forums and contributing to the international community's efforts to maintain international peace and security, combating terrorism, protecting human rights, and resolving disputes through dialogue and peaceful means in accordance with the provisions of international law and the rules of international legitimacy.
The Emir highlighted the important role of Malaysia in the Southeast Asian region and in the Islamic world in general, wishing the King health and happiness and the Kingdom of Malaysia further progress and prosperity.

The dinner banquet was attended by Prime Minister Mohammad Najib bin Tun Haji Abdul Razak and his wife and a number of Their Excellencies Ministers and high-ranking officials, as well as a number of Their Excellencies heads of diplomatic missions accredited to Malaysia.
The banquet was also attended by a number of Qatari and Malaysian businessmen taking part in the Qatari-Malaysian forum.
Earlier, the Emir and the Malaysian prime minister attended the signing of a number of Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) between the governments of the two countries at the latter's premises in Kuala Lumpur.
The Emir and the prime minister attended the signing of MoU for cooperation in training of diplomats and another MoU for cooperation in the field of higher education which aims at the exchange of experts, faculty members and students , as well as the exchange of educational experiences and sources of learning.
They also attended the signing of a MoU on legal cooperation activities to promote and support cooperation activities to encourage and support activities in the framework of the exchange of legislation and experiences and a MoU to promote bilateral judicial cooperation.
During his meeting with the king at the Royal Istana Negara Palace , the two leaders held talks on bilateral relations and ways to strengthen and develop them in addition to exchanging views on a number of current regional and international issues.
The meeting was attended by the prime minister and other dignitaries and officials accompanying the Emir.
A session of official talks were held between Qatar led by His Highness the Emir and Malaysia led by the Prime Minister Mohammad Najib Tun Abdul Razzak at the prime minister's office.
During the session, the Emir and the prime minister discussed bilateral relations and ways of supporting and developing them in various fields so as to push them forward to a wider strategic level.
The areas of cooperation which were discussed and reviewed during the session included economy, trade exchange, investment opportunities and human and social development, especially education, in order to serve the common interests of the two countries and for the benefit of the two brotherly peoples.
The talks also tackled a number of regional and international issues of mutual interest, especially means to enhance joint cooperation in the fight against terrorism.
The Emir and the prime minister held a meeting during which they discussed the close ties that link the two countries and ways of developing them and exchanged views on regional and international issues .
His Highness the Emir attended a luncheon banquet hosted by the prime minister , in honour of the Emir and the accompanying delegation, at the Prime Minister's Palace Seri Perdana.
At the luncheon, a group of children from PERMATA Seni school performed folklore songs and some Arabic songs, to welcome the Emir and as an expression of the deep relations between Qatar and Malaysia.
The function was attended by wife of the Malaysian Prime Minister Rosmah Mansor and ministers and senior officials.
At the end of a very successful two-day visit, His Highness the Emir left Kuala Lumpur yesterday night for Singapore. He was seen off at Kuala Lumpur International Airport by Malaysia's Minister of International Trade and Industry Mustapa Mohamed, Qatar's Ambassador to Malaysia Issa Mohamed al-Mannai and staff of the Qatari Embassy in Kuala Lumpur.
The Emir was accorded an official farewell ceremony at the Royal Palace led by Sultan Muhammad V and Mohamed Najib bin Tun Haji Abdul Razak.
Shiekh Tamim sent cables to the king and the prime minister , expressing thanks and appreciation for the warm welcome accorded to him and the accompanying delegation during the visit.
