Jassim and Hamad bin Jassim Charitable Foundation and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) have signed a co-operation agreement aimed at providing emergency healthcare to Yemeni refugees in Somalia.
The agreement was signed by Saeed al-Hajri, board member and chief executive officer of Jassim and Hamad bin Jassim Charitable Foundation, and Khalid Khalifa, regional representative of the UNHCR for the Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC).
The agreement includes a $250,000 grant from the Jassim and Hamad bin Jassim Charitable Foundation to provide healthcare to more than 2,000 Yemeni refugees in Somalia, focusing on people suffering from chronic diseases and those in need of
psychological support.
In a statement on the occasion of the signing of the agreement, al-Hajri noted the importance of the co-operation with UNHCR. “This agreement stems from our full faith as Jassim and Hamad Bin Jassim Charitable Foundation,” to co-operate with the office of UNHCR with a view to providing a better life for refugees to preserve their dignity “.
For his part, the UNHCR regional representative stressed the importance of the support, expressing his gratitude for the donation provided by the Jassim and Hamad bin Jassim Charitable Foundation for Yemeni refugees in Somalia, because of the urgent need. “We are confident that this project will make a difference in the lives of these refugees and will provide them with a healthier life,” he added.
Estimates suggest there are more than 5,000 Yemeni refugees who have fled to Somalia since the outbreak of the conflict in Yemen, most of them arrived by boats.
Most of the Yemeni refugees are concentrated in the Puntland and Somaliland regions, while some have taken refuge in Mogadishu. (QNA)
