A woman lawyer was arrested for abducting a newborn girl from a hospital and taking her to Salem last week.
Manimekalai, 29, from Salem posed as a policewoman to enter the government hospital’s maternity wards. She befriended the victim, whose name was also Manimekalai and who had two other small children, by promising to get her financial help. She took the woman along with her children and made them stay at a lodge nearby.
Two days later, Manimekalai brought the mother back to the hospital but left with the baby on the pretext of going to the scan room.
When she did not return, the woman complained to police with the help of the hospital staff. Police zeroed in on Manimekalai based on the hospital’s surveillance camera and her mobile phone records. They found that her sister, driver and a hospital security guard were her associates. Police also found another three-year-old boy in Manimekalai’s custody whom she had kidnapped three years ago.
The baby was restored to its mother.

Sri Krishna Sweets heirs go to court over trademark

The Madras High Court has dismissed a dispute over brand trademark between two heirs of Coimbatore’s famed Sri Krishna Sweets.
The popular sweet shop begun by Mahadeva Iyer in 1972 today has around 100 outlets in South India and many abroad.
However recently Mahadeva Iyer’s sons Murali and Krishnan partitioned their property after which Murali went to court over Krishnan using the Sri Krishna brand name for his shops.
Murali claimed that his father had registered the trademark to his name in 1948.
The court verified the claim and ruled that Krishnan had equal right over the trademark.
Murali has decided to appeal in the Supreme Court.
