Qatar Charity has allocated QR5mn for new relief projects to alleviate the suffering of internally displaced Rohingya people inside Myanmar and refugees who have been forced to flee to Bangladesh. In a press release yesterday, the charity stated that the amount was earmarked for food, shelter and non-food items and will cover tens of thousands of refugees.
The charity said that it had already initiated a number of these projects through its field office in Bangladesh, or in co-operation with a number of United Nations agencies and international organisations, as part of its humanitarian campaign. It pointed out that QR1mn of the total amount was directed to Myanmar to build 40 emergency shelters in co-ordination with the British International Islamic Relief Organization in order to provide housing for the displaced. It also earmarked QR4mn for Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh to implement several projects in food and shelter sectors in co-operation with international and regional humanitarian institutions.
The worsening humanitarian situation of Rohingya refugees and displaced people calls for urgent humanitarian intervention and more assistance to alleviate their suffering as a moral duty, said director of the relief department at Qatar Charity Mohammed al-Kaabi.
He stressed that Qatar Charity, which is following the humanitarian situation through its field office and its international partners, will continue to support Rohingya victims through the implementation of more urgent relief projects in the areas of food and shelter, as well as clothing and healthcare. Earlier this week, Qatar Charity announced that it will fund the construction of 420 temporary housing units for displaced Rohingyas in three regions in Rakhine and Kagan provinces.
