Around 20,100 heads of livestock have been slaughtered at the Central Market abattoirs during the Eid holidays.
Dr Mohamed Fareed al-Juwhari, veterinary co-ordinator at Doha Municipality’s Health Control Section, told local Arabic daily Arrayah that this number included sheep, cows and camels.
Work continued at these slaughterhouses from 5am until 7pm during the holidays, with 220 butchers and 30 workers deployed in shifts.
The process was supervised by 24 veterinarians, who checked the heath of the animals before and after slaughter. Any meat found unfit for human consumption was destroyed with a certificate issued for the purpose, and the owner of the carcass would be given a healthy one as replacement.
Dr al-Juwhari stressed that abattoirs are the only places where livestock is slaughtered properly and by following rules, warning people about the risks involved in hiring unlicensed butchers to slaughter cattle at homes. The Central Market in Doha saw a huge turnout of customers on the Eid days as many people were keen to purchase their sacrificial animals and slaughter them at the abattoirs in the market.
