The Cabinet has approved a draft resolution that extends the deadline for different entities to comply with the law on protecting personal data by six months.
The decision was taken at the Cabinet’s ordinary meeting in Doha yesterday, the official Qatar News Agency (QNA) reported.
His Highness the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani had issued Law No 13 of 2016 on the protection of the privacy of personal data in November last year. Earlier, in June 2016, the Cabinet had taken the necessary measures to issue the draft law on protecting personal data following a review of the Advisory Council’s recommendations on the matter.
According to a Gulf Times report, the law outlines obligations for organisations and companies to ensure that they properly protect personal information from being leaked or hacked. It also includes articles that require consent from individuals before their personal information can be used by an organisation.
After HE the Prime Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa al-Thani chaired the Cabinet’s ordinary weekly meeting at the Emiri Diwan yesterday, HE the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs Ahmed bin Abdullah bin Zaid al-Mahmoud said the Cabinet gave its nod to a draft resolution on the decision of HE the Minister of Municipality and Environment to issue regulations for the registration system for private laboratories.
Meanwhile, the Cabinet approved the ratification of the Statute of the Islamic Organisation for Food Security of the Organisation of Islamic Co-operation, QNA reported.
The organisation aims to provide its members with technical experience and knowledge on various aspects of sustainable agriculture, rural development, food security and biotechnology, as well as assess and monitor the food security situation in the member states in co-ordination with them to identify and provide emergency and humanitarian assistance, mobilise and manage financial and agricultural resources for the development of agriculture and enhance food security in the member states.
Further, the Cabinet approved the holding of the first meeting of the Joint Ministerial Committee on Economic, Trade and Technical Co-operation between the governments of Qatar and the UK. The meeting will be held in London on October 4.
