Rohingya Muslims from Myanmar continue to enter Bangladesh amid increased surveillance. At least 100 Rohingyas have taken refuge at Kutupalong and Balokhali settlement camps in Cox’s Bazaar over the last 24 hours, according to Rohingya refugee leaders in the country.
Early Saturday morning, Bangladesh Coast Guard also pushed back 31 more Rohingyas who were trying to enter the country after crossing the River Naf after leaving their homes in northern Maungdaw.
Coast Guard Chittagong east zone Lieutenant Commander Sheikh Fakar Uddin said they caught the Rohingyas travelling in a boat through the river towards Golarchar of Shahporir Dwip in Teknaf.
Bangladesh Border Guard has noticed an increase in the number of Rohingyas crossing into Bangladesh fleeing persecution in Myanmar.
The UN estimated that a total of 74,000 Rohingyas crossed the border into Bangladesh in 2016 after Myanmar army launched a campaign to root out Rohingya terrorists.
Allegations of widespread violations of human rights were reported during the campaign that went on for about five months starting early October last year.
Different international rights bodies expressed concern after the Myanmar government increased security activities in Maungdaw and raised an alarm that more Rohingyas might be forced to leave their home and Bangladesh might receive a fresh refugee influx.
Meanwhile, two Bangladesh Supreme Court judges visited Kutupalong Rohingya refugee camp on Saturday - they are members of the apex court’s special committee for child rights.
The judges — Sheikh Hasan Arif and Imam Ali — spent two hours talking to the refugees at the camp.
Cox’s Bazaar Refugee, Relief and Repatriation Commissioner Abul Kalam Azad and representatives of International Organisation for Migration accompanied the judges.
