Al Wakrah city has joined the Global Network of Learning Cities of Unesco’s Institute for Lifelong Education as a member, the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) has announced.
This marks an achievement for the ministry, represented by Al Wakrah Municipality, and has been made possible due to its efforts to spread sustainability concepts and partnerships with social organisations, according to a press statement from the MME.
The director of Unesco’s Institute for Lifelong Education welcomed the accession of Al Wakrah city to the Global Network of Learning Cities, as the city has put in place the necessary standards to acquire such membership. In the application for the membership, the municipality affirmed the importance of education in implementing Qatar National Vision 2030 and in resolving the difficulties faced by world governments.
The Unesco Global Network of Learning Cities is an international policy-oriented network providing inspiration, know-how and best practice. Learning cities at all stages of development can benefit greatly from sharing ideas with other cities, as solutions for issues that arise as one learning city develops may already exist in other cities.
Meanwhile, the MME informed that Al Daayen Municipality’s Gardens Section has held an event on dates. It features an exhibition of dates and various types of palm trees in addition to a lecture on the nutritional value of dates. At the end of the event, boxes of dates were given out to the participating employees and visitors. The ministry also said 10.8 tonnes of dates were sold on Saturday at the ongoing second Local Dates Festival in Souq Waqif. The event was attended by more than 5,500 people on that day. The festival is set to conclude on August 12.
