Electricity to a number of old buildings in Al Asmakh has been disconnected, it is learnt.
This comes as authorities accelerate efforts for demolition in the area as part of ongoing development works, say sources familiar with the developments.
Notices for evacuation were served on a number of tenants in Al Asmakh and neighbouring areas a few months ago and the municipal authorities put up notices with a May 31 deadline on one of the main streets in Al Asmakh.
Confirming that disconnection of power to many premises of the area is currently under way, some shopkeepers said they are keeping their establishments open with the help of generators as residents are still coming to their stores for
purchases.
Enquiries found that some of the old buildings have several ‘single’ workers as occupants and they are preparing to move out of the area as electricity to those buildings is in the process of being disconnected.
Some residents told Gulf Times that they were not waiting any more for fresh evacuation notices as disconnection of power had already started in the area. “My building owner’s representative told us to look for new premises at the beginning of this year and hence we decided to vacate our building last month,” said a shopkeeper who has moved to Fereej Bin Omran.
With a large number of shops already moving out of the area, the locality has begun to wear a deserted look – especially in the evenings. Some of the shopkeepers have moved to new places and opened shops there, the sources said.
