A Dhaka court yesterday granted bail to Bangladesh cricketer Arafat Sunny in a dowry case filed by Nasrin Sultana, who claimed to be Sunny’s wife.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jakir Hossain passed the order after Sunny surrendered before the court seeking bail, said his lawyer.
On Sunday, the court framed charges against Sunny in a dowry case filed by Sultana.
The court also issued arrest warrant as Sunny could not appear before the court as he has been suffering from chikunguniya.
On April 5, the court granted interim bail to the cricketer.
Sultana filed the case against the cricketer and his mother for demanding 2mn taka as dowry on January 23.
She also filed another case under the Information and Communication Technology Act.
Sunny appeared in the court yesterday. His lawyer presented documentation of his treatment for the bail petition. Sunny did not speak during the hearing.
The case accuses him of assaulting Sultana for dowry. The case was started in January. Five months later it was transferred to the court of Magistrate Zakir.
Sunny, the spinner of the national cricket team, married Sultana in 2014 without his family’s consent and started living with her at a rented house. He then pestered Nasrin for 2mn taka as dowry, as per the case dossier.
Sunny was arrested in January after Sultana sued him in a case under the Information and Communication Technology or ICT Act.
Later, the plaintiff went on to file two more cases under the Dowry Prohibition Act and the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.
The 30-year-old has revealed that he has two wives; Sultana is the second.
