Qatar’s U-23 team recorded their first victory in the three-nation Friendly International tournament in Doha with a 2-0 win over Kyrgyzstan at the Al Sadd Sports Club yesterday.
The tournament is being held in preparation for Qatar’s U-23 Asian Cup qualifiers to be held in Qatar later this month.
Coach Felix Sanchez, who has been also named the interim coach of the senior national side after Jorge Fossati’s shock resignation, is trying out various combinations ahead of the Asian U-23 qualifying tournament.
After a 3-3 draw with Kyrgyzstan earlier in the tournament and a 1-0 defeat to Uzbekistan, Qatar finally found their groove and struck first through Ahmed al-Saadi in the 47th minute.
Although the match was largely played out in the midfield with both teams adopting a cautious attitude, Qatar’s first goal was a result of some attacking play which caught the Kyrgyz defence napping.
Kyrgyzstan, who lost to the Uzbeks earlier, pressed hard for the equalizer but failed to breach the Qatari defence.
The Qataris also missed a couple of chances but registered their second goal when they were awarded a penalty late in the match after a serious Kyrgyz foul.
Uzbekistan will take on Kyrgyzstan today while Qatar take on Uzbekistan in the final match of the event on Thursday.
