Demand of closing Al Jazeera criticised
UN Special Rapporteur on freedom of opinion and expression, David Kaye, has criticised the demand by the four countries imposing siege on Qatar to close the Al Jazeera media network. Kaye considered the demand of closing Al Jazeera to be a serious threat to media freedom and a strong blow to the media pluralism in the region. “This demand represents a serious threat to media freedom if States, under the pretext of a diplomatic crisis, take measures to force the dismantling of Al Jazeera,” Kaye said.  He called on the international community to urge the siege countries not to pursue this demand against Qatar, to resist taking steps to censor media in their own territory and regionally, and to encourage support for independent media in the Middle East.
