Jason Greenblatt, one of US President Donald Trump's top advisers on Middle East affairs, met Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah on Thursday, Abbas' office said.
Greenblatt, the Trump Organisation's former top lawyer, is also expected to meet Israeli officials in the coming days to follow up on the push by Trump to restart peace talks during the US leader's two-day visit to the region earlier this week.
Trump underlined his commitment to brokering a long-sought Middle East peace agreement throughout his trip, though he did not give a concrete outline of the steps he wanted to take to achieve that.
US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson told journalists on Wednesday that the president had been "very forceful" in his discussions with Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during the trip.
Trump had made it clear that everyone needed to be ready to compromise, Tillerson added.
The pan-Arabic daily al-Hayat reported on Wednesday that Trump is expected to announce a new peace initiative in the coming weeks.
Citing an unnamed senior official, the London-based paper reported that the peace initiative will set a time limit on talks, during which each side will discuss final status issues separately.
The last round of peace talks, brokered by former US secretary of state John Kerry, failed in 2014.
