Qatar Shooting and Archery Association (QSAA) will organise Nishan Championship at the Losail Shooting range from June 13 to 20 to mark the Holy Month of Ramadan.
The eight-day event has been sponsored by Ooredoo and Al Kass is the media partner. The online registration for the competition will begin on the first day of Ramadan.
Addressing a press conference, QSAA president Ali Mohamed al-Kuwari said that amateur and professional shooters, along with archers, will be vying for the top prizes in the championship. Those who pick up the maximum number of points from six events will be crowned winners at the end of the eight-day event.
“We have come up with an innovative concept of the event for the Nishan Championship on the occasion of the Ramadan this year. There will be two overall winners – amateur and professional. Both the winners (professional and amateur) will be awarded a car,” said Ali Mohamed al-Kuwari.
“The overall second and third place winners, in amateur and professional, will also be awarded,” he said.
“Both the men and women competitors will be vying for the top prize and there is a possibility that a woman might finish as an overall winner.”
Besides the overall winner, there will be prize winners in all the six categories, for both amateur and professionals. The contestants will compete in six events of shooting and archery.
Explaining the format al-Kuwari said that a professional shooter cannot skip archery events and vice versa.
“It will be fun to see an accomplished professional shooter take part in archery, which will be something new for him; that will be an interesting and funny part of the event,” he said.
“It is compulsory to compete in all the six events. But competitors, who do exceedingly well in three events and fare poorly in the other three, may end up picking up the top prize.”
QSAA secretary general Majid al-Naimi and Al Kass Channel operations manager Turki Yousef al-Subaei were present on the occasion.
QSAA secretary general al-Naimi said, “We’re expecting over 200 participants in this new event. Participants can register online through the website or at the QSAA office in Losail. We hope the championship to be quite exciting.
“Participants will get 10 days to practise and get familiar with the events during the competition, which are scheduled in the night, after breaking the fast. We all hope the competition will be quite entertaining and a big draw.”
Al Kass Channel operations manager al-Subaei said: “We’re very delighted to be part of the Nishan Championship. We want to thank the QSAA for giving us a chance to support the competition. We’ve made a special plan to cover it extensively.”
Several entertainment programmes for children and families will be held during the competition between 9.30pm and 1.30am.
