Qatar Shooting and Archery Association (QSAA) yesterday felicitated shooters who bagged medals at the recently concluded Islamic Solidarity Games in Baku.
The champions were honoured by QSAA president Ali Mohamed al-Kuwari in the presence of general secretary Majed al-Naimi at the Losail shooting Range.
Those honoured at the ceremony included gold medallist Aldana Saad al-Mubarak (25m pistol), silver medallist Ahmed Zayed al-Shammari (Men’s 25m Standard Pistol) and bronze medallists Kholoud Hassan al-Khalaf (Women’s Trap and Mixed Trap Team), Mohamed Khejaim (Mixed Trap Team) and Nasser Ali al-Hemaidi (Men’s Trap).
“It was a tough competition in Baku. I was expecting a medal at the Games, but did not expect to win gold. My hard work before the Games paid off as I won against some very good shooters,” a delighted al-Mubarak said.
Al-Kuwari was delighted with the rich medal haul the sharp shooters brought home from Azerbaijan’s capital.
“When we went to Baku, we had targeted ten medals from the Games. We were very happy that the first five medals which came to Qatar were from shooting. Four of our shooters were unlucky as they qualified for the finals but finished fourth. But we are happy with what we managed to get in the end,” said
al-Kuwari.
He urged the shooters to continue their good performance in the years to come with Tokyo 2020 as a target for more medals.
“We have no limits. Our goal is to go to Tokyo 2020 and win medals for Qatar.
We have set the plan in motion,”
said al-Kuwari.
Qatar finished the Games in Baku with 12 medals, out of which five came from shooting.
The remaining medals came from tennis, athletics and gymnastics.
