When the Salman Khan hit and run case was going on in court, a key witness was not examined. Kamaal Khan, a close friend of the star who had also been playback singer in many of his movies, was said to have been in the car that had run over sleeping pavement dwellers. His initial police statement had reportedly said that Salman was at the wheel when it happened.
But strangely when the case had been going on, his name had been removed as a witness by the prosecution.  What bearing this might have had on the case is unclear, given that Kamaal had gone back on his first statement and later said that Salman was not driving. In any case, there were questions over his absence in the trial.
Indeed he seemed to have disappeared from Bollywood entirely over the last five years or so. But he is back and once again it has something to do with Salman whose forthcoming movie Tubelight’s first song has just been released. The singer is Kamaal. Some in social networking are questioning the resurfacing of Kamaal now that the case is no longer hanging over Salman’s head. But then that is what friends are for.
The trailer of Tubelight has also come in for questions, with the similarity to a Hollywood movie called Little Boy. Scenes, the broad plot outline and traits of character seem similar, even if Little Boy has a boy playing the role that Salman is emulating. However, director Kabir Khan clarified that this is not a case of plagiarism and that the movie had been officially adapted with permission. He however, maintains that the two movies are very different.
In other Salman news, there is also his decision to buy the rights of Pulimurugan, a Malayalam movie that had broken the record for the highest grossing in that language. The actor in the original was Mohanlal and the movie was an out and out commercial entertainer with no coherence or logic, of a man who is an expert at catching tigers and then gets mixed up with a criminal gang.
But the audience likes such stuff if a suitable superstar plays it and there no bigger one at the moment in Bollywood than Salman. The more brainless the stunts the better it will be received. So the movie will almost certainly get him many hundreds of crores more.
