The Ministry of Economy and Commerce (MEC) has conducted a surprise inspection of commercial outlets at the Industrial Area and the Old Airport commercial street to ensure their compliance with the stipulations of Law No 8 of 2008 on Consumer Protection.
Some 13 violations were registered at the Industrial Area for sale and display of counterfeit products. After reviewing the invoices of these items at the violating outlets, MEC inspectors were able to identify the true origins of such products, in addition to the outlets that distribute them and the storehouses that pertain to the distributors in Doha and Al Khor.
Upon co-ordination with the security department concerned, MEC inspectors searched such storehouses in Doha city and discovered 470 counterfeit items, mostly branded perfumes and cosmetics.
A similar inspection was carried out at Al Khor storehouses, where 950 counterfeit toys were found. These also did not comply with the standards. In addition, 20 bags of expired tobacco were found there.
All the legal procedures were taken against the violators, and violation reports were issued. Violation of Law No 8 of 2008 entails a fine of QR3,000 to QR1mn in addition to the administrative closure of the outlet for different periods of time.
