An Assam police officer was arrested yesterday for making an objectionable comment on social media against a woman legislator of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, officials said.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Anjan Bora was arrested following departmental and criminal proceedings against him. The state unit of the BJP had also lodged a case against him.
Bora had a few days back posted on Facebook that one of BJP’s woman legislators had been running a prostitution racket from her office chamber in the Assam Secretariat in Dispur. Although Bora did not name anyone, in his post, he made it clear who he was referring to.
He was produced in the court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate in Kamrup yesterday, who released him on bail.
Assam Director General of Police Mukesh Sahay said the law will take its own course.
“Whenever someone violates the service rules, the law will take its course,” he said adding that there will be departmental action against him.
Bora, however, stood by his charges and claimed that he has got enough evidence to prove them.
BJP general secretary Dilip Saikia said Bora’s “remark has damaged the party’s image. Therefore, we want the state government to probe the matter seriously and act promptly.”
Demanding immediate action, BJP spokesperson Aparajita Bhuyan said: “It’s highly condemnable to malign the image of a woman. We want the state police to act swiftly on the matter and punish the culprit.”
This is not the first time that Bora has got embroiled in controversy over a social media post. In a similar incident last year, he had posted hate speech on his Facebook wall, leading to his suspension.
