Top Indian cueist Pankaj Advani put himself in contention for a historic Asian billiards and snooker double when he entered the final of the 33rd ACBS Asian Snooker Championship yesterday.
At the Qatar Billiards and Snooker Federation Hall in Doha, Advani defeated Pakistan’s Mohamed Bilal 5-0 (82-44, 67-12, 50-38, 66-8, 67-8) with effortless ease in the semi-final.
The Indian will now face China’s talented teen Lv Haotian in today’s final hoping to add the snooker crown to his Asian billiards title won earlier this month in India.
The 31-year-old has lost three Asian Confederation of Billiard Sports (ACBS) snooker finals; first to compatriot Alok Kumar in 2004 in Jordan; then to India’s Aditya Mehta in 2012 in Doha; and in 2015 to Pakistan’s Hamza Akbar in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Advani, who hit the big league as an 18-year-old is the top-seed here and faces an upcoming teen star in Haotian, seeded second and the two provide for a mouth-watering clash.
Haotian overcame the last year’s runner-up Mohamed Shehab of the UAE 5-3 to clinch a place in the final.
Earlier in the quarter-finals, Advani was in full flow as he beat UAE’s leading snooker player Mohammed al Joaker 5-1 to assure India’s only medal in the event.
The second frame saw Advani’s highest break of this tournament at 102.
The final of the premier non-professional snooker tournament in Asia will be played at 1 pm today.
