The Swedish capital Stockholm will not bid for the 2026 Winter Olympic Games, Mayor Karin Wanngard said on  Wednesday, citing a lack of political support.
Wanngard's Social Democrats favoured a bid, but concluded "there is not a broad political majority to present a bid," she told Swedish Radio.
"At present" only her party were strongly in favour of a bid, "which is insufficient," she added.
A feasibility study presented in January argued that Stockholm has good infrastructure and has successfully organised large events, including the Eurovision Song Contest in 2016 and the ice hockey world championships.
The Greens, which are part of the city's ruling coalition, said they opposed a bid.
In 2014, Stockholm's former ruling coalition dropped plans to bid for the 2022 Winter Games that were awarded to Beijing.
The Swedish capital hosted the 1912 summer Olympic Games. Several other Swedish bids have also failed, most recently Ostersund that contended for the 2002 Winter Games.
The International Olympic Committee will decide the 2026 host in 2019. Sion in western Switzerland has expressed interest in organising these games as has Austria's Tyrol region.
