Qatar, unable to capitalise on a fiery start, slumped to a 3-9 loss at the hands of defending champions Iran in the Men’s Indoor Asia Cup Hockey at Aspire Dome yesterday.
Tariq Nazir and Mohamed Sohail Mustafa had given the hosts a 2-0 lead within the first five minutes of the Pool A match.
However, the very next minute, captain Behdad Beiranvand began an eight-goal spree for the six-time champions that snatched the game away from Maggid Abu-Talib’s men.
Hamid Noraniyan scored a hat-trick for the Iranians, who have won all the six editions of the tournament since its inception in 2008.
Yaghoub Bahrami added a brace, while Behnam Sadi and Mohsen Bohlouli scored one each, with Navid Taherirad hitting the final nail in the final moments of the game.
Qatar’s Mohamed Sami Ullah pulled a consolation goal back in the 39th minute.
Iran top the pool with six points having won both their matches so far, with Qatar in third with a solitary point, courtesy a Day One draw against Oman.

Earlier in the day, Thailand had handed North Korea their second loss of the tournament, after scoring four second-half goals to force a 4-1 win.

However, that remained their only goal of the match, with Thailand’s Chantree Ladawon equalising two minutes into the second half. Tikhamporn Sakunpithak added two field goals, while Thanaporn Tongkham scored one in their victory.
Thailand are second in standings with six points, having beaten Uzbekistan on Day One of the tournament on Monday for their first three, with a chance to go level with Kazakhstan today. Thailand play China today for the first time.
