Cup tournaments are always prone to upsets and last night that was the case once again as Qatargas League side Messaimeer knocked out QSL giants and former winners Al Arabi in the second round of the prestigious Emir Cup at the Qatar Sports Club.
Ayman Mohamed scored a stoppage time penalty to give Mesaimeer a 3-2 win after Khaled Jaberti and Abdulrahman Saad had struck earlier. For Al Arabi, Sergio Paulinho and Boualem Khoukhi were on target.
Mesaimeeer will now clash with Al Gharafa in the third round on Thursday, the first time they have progressed so far in the Emir Cup. In the opening round,
they had edged out Qatar Sports Club 2-1.
The match started on a fast note with Al Arabi dominating without getting any clear scoring chances. But they eventually got ahead with a perfectly struck 30-yard free-kick by Boualem Khoukhi in the 13th minute that beat the Mesaimeer goalkeeper all ends up.
Al Arabi had made a perfect start but their lead lasted only a minute as Abdulrahman beat Mustapha Bayal inside the box to head the ball past goalkeeper Baba Malick for the equaliser.
Mesaimeer went ahead four minutes later when Jaberti received a long ball to beat the goalkeeper with a header for his team’s second goal.
Al Arabi, however, equalised through Brazilian Paulinho who had a lacklustre season so far, his brilliant strike coming in the 26th minute.
With the game tied at 2-2 and into the final minute of stoppage time, Mesaimeer were awarded a penalty and Ayman neatly put the ball into the net for the winner.
In another match, Al Ahli eased past Qatargas champions Al Markhiya with a 2-0 victory at the Grand Hamad Stadium.
Tunisian striker Yassine Chikhaoui opened the scoring for Al Ahli in the 41st minute with a volley and Mohsen al-Yazidi made it 2-0 in the 71st with a header from a perfect cross from Meshal Budawood.
Al Ahli will now face Al Kharaitiyat on Friday in a third round match.
Also yesterday, Al Khor thrashed Muaither 3-0 with Mouhssine Lajour finding the net twice and Kuwaiti defender Sultan al-Enezi adding the third. Al Khor will meet Al Sailiya in Thursday’s third round match.
