Diesel prices will go up in Qatar by Dhs5 a litre in April, the Ministry of Energy and Industry (MEI) announced on Thursday.
However, MEI said there would not be any change in the price of petrol (both premium and super) next month.
The Ministry said diesel price will go up to QR1.60 a litre (QR1.55 now), while the 91-octane premium gasoline will remain at QR1.60 and 95 super at QR1.70 next month.
Fuel prices in Qatar were allowed to fluctuate in response to changes in the global market from May 1.
Every month, a special committee comprising representatives from various government bodies, would review fuel prices (gasoline and diesel) and make recommendations on proposed prices for the local market accordingly.
The monthly revision in local fuel prices followed the government’s decision on fuel subsidy reforms in Qatar.
What impact the fuel price hike has on consumer items remains to be seen as most of the goods are transported to Qatar from abroad.
According to BMI Research, a Fitch Group company the fuel subsidy reform would help Qatar reduce its budget deficit by allowing spending to decrease.
In the neighbouring UAE, the fuel prices will fall in April for the first time this year.
Starting April 1, the prices per litre have been set at Dh1.95 (Super 98), which is down from Dh2.03 earlier; Dh1.84 (Special 95), down from Dh1.92 and E Plus-91-Dh1.77, down from Dh1.85.
The diesel price has been reduced to Dh1.95 per litre from Dh2.02 earlier, reports from UAE indicate.
