The Indian Cultural Centre (ICC) hosted a classical Kathak performance at its Ashoka Hall recently. Kathak is one of the oldest dance forms to have originated in India.
The performance was led by Shama Bhate, who is a well-known artiste, choreographer and director. She has received many awards and teaches at multiple universities. The team consisted of seven artistes and support staff. The programme was well received and appreciated by the audience.
It included different performances such as Osmosis, which depicts how the medium of dance and music cross and re-cross every time, changing the density of the outcome; Persian Market, a dance that invariably takes its inspiration from music and explores rhythm with joy and ecstasy in a Persian market; Samson and Delilah, in which the story of Samson and Delilah is depicted through the oriental sensitivity of Kathak dance; In Tandem, which is a presentation based on a South Indian composition; Rendezvous, where a western symphony is preceded by Indian musical composition “Gat” and both meet up together, share something significant and vital but follow their own paths; and Intrigue, which is about a mysterious area in composition, which signals an artiste, eludes the artiste, and also triggers the artiste.
The programme at the Indian Cultural Centre was inaugurated by Deputy Chief of Mission at Indian embassy, R K Singh. Counsellor at Indian embassy and ICC Co-ordinating Officer Rakesh Kamble, ICC President Milan Arun, ICC General Secretary Juttas Paul, ICC Head of Cultural Activities Vishal Mehta spoke at the function. ICC presented mementos to the troupe members on behalf of the Indian community in Qatar.
