The Bangladesh embassy observed the 46th anniversary of the country’s Independence and National Day with due solemnity on Sunday.

The programme started in the morning with the hoisting of the national flag by ambassador Ashud Ahmed on the embassy premises. Present on the occasion were embassy officials and a good number of expatriates from Bangladesh.

After the flag hoisting, prayers were offered for the “eternal peace of the departed souls of the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and the martyrs of the Liberation War as well as for the continued peace and progress of the country”, the embassy said in a press statement.

A meeting was also held at the embassy to discuss the significance of the day. To begin with, the attendees stood in silence for a minute as a mark of respect for the martyrs of the Liberation War. Then, messages from the president, prime minister, foreign minister and minister of state for foreign affairs were read out.

In his speech, Ahmed recalled Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the four leaders for their contribution to the liberation of Bangladesh. While noting that Bangladesh has traditionally sent unskilled workers, he said there is a need to look for sectors where skilled workers could find jobs. There are initiatives to explore sectors such as trade, investment and business, and the embassy is also working to enhance Bangladesh-Qatar bilateral relations through high-level visits from both sides, he added.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh MHM School & College, under the supervision of the mission, organised a programme on the school premises early yesterday to celebrate the Independence and National Day. The ambassador hoisted the national flag and inaugurated the event.

He encouraged the students to devote themselves to pursue their studies to become worthy citizens by taking forward the country and materialise the dream of Bangabandhu.
