Twenty-four teams will take part in the inaugural Qplays Sixes Gully Cricket Carnival 2017, which will be held today and tomorrow.
The two-day event will be played with soft tennis ball at the Asian Town International Cricket Stadium. The event is organised by Qplays, in association with Ibn Ajayan Projects, one of the leading facility management companies in Qatar and QECC – The Largest Cricket Players Community in Qatar.
The tournament is managed by Qbiz Events.
Today’s matches will begin from 6pm and will continue till 11pm, with the opening ceremony scheduled at 8pm. Tomorrow’s matches will be held from 7am to 11am and then from 3pm to 9pm.
Winners will take home a cash prize of QR 5,000 and a trophy, while the runner-up will get QR 2,500 and also a trophy. Gully cricket is a popular form of cricket, played in the streets and grounds by aspiring cricketers around the world.
It’s always a sight to see hundreds play this version of the game every Friday in Qatar in almost any vacant patch of land, be it labourers near their accommodations, or others in parking areas.
The tournament is an initiative from organisers to tap into the talent at the grassroots level and give them a platform to excel on the big stage. Unlike the professional cricket, the rules are improvised to suit the nature of the gully cricket format. Each match at the Sixes Gully Cricket Carnival will be played between two teams of eleven players each.
A match consists of a maximum of six overs, bowled by each side. A team shall not be permitted to declare its innings closed. To be eligible for the Qplays Super 6 Series, players must be a minimum of 14 years of age. A batsman must retire not out upon reaching a personal score of 30 runs, but may not retire before reaching 30 runs (except for injury).
The Sixes Gully Cricket Carnival has also been backed by number of brands like Grand Mart, Doha Rocks, Smile Hypermarket, Lamborghini Energy Drink, Sharaf DG and Al Wadi. The media partners for the tournament are Q Tickets, BQ Magazine, Al Raza Solutions and Clear Graphics on Print.
