A wet weekend is in store as the Met department has forecast thundery rain in some places on Friday along with strong winds in parts of the country by midday.

It may rain in the early hours of the day and then again at night, which may be thundery at times, the weather office has said.

Doha is among the places where rain is likely on Friday and thundershowers have been forecast for Saturday as well as the country experiences a spell of ‘unsettled weather’.

A warning has also been issued for offshore areas on Friday, where thundershowers, windy conditions and high seas are expected.

Earlier this week, the Met department had said “a state of instability was expected to affect the country during the weekend due to the passage of an upper-level trough of low pressure”.

Light, scattered rain was reported from some places – including Doha – on Thursday. In the afternoon, the Met department tweeted that the chances of rain would improve over the next few hours and a thunderstorm was expected at night.

Meanwhile, the detailed forecast for Friday says the wind speed may go up to 25 knots in some places at times. Offshore, winds may attain a top speed of 30 knots during thundery rain, with the sea level rising to 12ft.

Cloudy conditions will prevail in inshore areas and there could be scattered rain in the early hours and then again at night. The rain may be thundery at times in some places.

Offshore areas will see hazy and cloudy conditions and scattered rain is likely there as well, which could be thundery occasionally.

A minimum temperature of 15C is likely in Al Khor, Dukhan and Abu Samra on Friday, while in Doha it will be 17C. The maximum, on the other hand, will range from 18C to 26C.

Thursday, a minimum temperature of 14C was recorded in Abu Samra, Sheehaniya and other places, and 17C in the Doha airport area. The maximum ranged from 19C to 24C.

This is the second rainy spell in the country this month, which has also seen the temperature drop to historic lows in Qatar.
