Qatar Cancer Society (QCS) will mark World Cancer Day with a special event at Souq Waqif (West area), under the theme ‘In all languages, we can’, on February 23 and 24. The event is aimed at raising awareness of the disease, QCS said in a statement. A cancer booklet will be launched in a “first-of-its-kind” initiative in Qatar. The first day is dedicated to school students, with the programme running from 9am until 12noon. The next day’s proceedings are open to the public, to be held from 4pm until 8pm, and will also see the participation of a number of embassies. Each of these will make presentations on folklore and heritage. Mariam al-Nuaimi, general manager of QCS, said World Cancer Day provides a “great opportunity to spread a healthy culture” – especially in view of the rising number of cases of the disease, which kills nearly 8.2mn people a year around the world. The World Cancer Day initiative aims to achieve a set of objectives, the most important of which is to raise awareness of the disease and spread a healthy lifestyle culture, while also highlighting the cancer-related health services available in Qatar.
