A two-day international conference which aims to raise awareness on the importance of legal regulations in sport activities at the local and regional levels, began yesterday at Qatar University (QU).
HE the Minister of Justice Dr Hassan Lahdan Saqr al-Mohannadi attended the opening ceremony of the conference on ‘Law and Sport: Contemporary Perspectives’.
Organised by QU College of Law (LAWC), in collaboration with the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC), the event also aims to highlight the economic benefits of investing in sport activities while identifying the legal and operational challenges in this area.
The event has brought together legal and sport experts and policymakers to discuss and share their ideas and experience on the most recent development and practices of sport regulations at the local, regional and international levels.
Participants are expected to provide efficient solutions for the various legal, economic and technical gaps and challenges that face the investment in sports, which will contribute to advancing the sport sector in Qatar in line with the goals of Qatar National Vision 2030.
HE Dr al-Mohannadi was joined by QU president Dr Hassan al-Derham, QOC secretary general Dr Thani al-Kuwari, and LAWC dean Dr Mohamed bin Abdulaziz al-Khulaifi, among others.
The programme featured the screening of a documentary film on LAWC and six panel discussions, such as the International Regulation of Sport, Sport and Civil Law, Sport and sanction, Governance of Sport, Arbitration in Sport Dispute, and Investment and Intellectual Property in Sport Law.
Speakers from Qatar, Algeria, Czech Republic, France, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Portugal, Tunisia, the UAE, the UK, and the US have been invited to deliver their presentations at the event.
In his welcome address, Dr al-Derham stated that the event will contribute to advancing the sport activity at all levels. Dr al-Kuwari described the conference as a first-of-its-kind aimed at exchanging experiences on issues related to law and 0sports.
Dr al-Khulaifi added the conference reflects QU’s pivotal role in contributing to social development in line with the the institution’s objectives to drive forward the social growth and community awareness.
