The Ministry of Economy and Commerce (MEC) has offered the public some advice on the importance of regular maintenance of motor vehicles and highlighted a slew of benefits accruing from such a healthy practice.

"This would save for the owners money and time, in addition to keeping the environment clean," the MEC pointed out in a release .
Regular checkup of the engine oil, oil filters, and tyre pressure and keeping these up to the required levels would save motorists around 23 gallons of petrol a year. According to international studies, the replacement of defective filter improves fuel consumption by around 10%, which translates to around 55 gallons less of gasoline per year. This would also reduce the production of nitrogen by 10% and organic byproduct gases by 20%. Also, keeping recommended tyre pressure improves petrol consumption by around 3%, which means saving up to 18 gallons of gasoline a year."
Regarding the brakes system, MEC said that consumers should take note of four signs indicative of the need to repair the brakes. These include vibration when using brakes, the brake pedal going down beyond the reasonable level, the vehicle moving to any side when pressing the brake pedal, and the brake producing strange sounds when applied.
MEC said that vehicle owners should keep an eye on the dashboard's warning lights, in particular those for the battery, oil level, airbags, and the anti-lock braking system (ABS), the engine, brakes and tyre pressure.
In case the vehicle breaks down on the road, MEC advised that it should be removed to the roadside away from the traffic if possible. Put the hazard light on and use a warning post 45 meters away from the stopped vehicle.
For monthly maintenance, owners should make sure that the headlights and rear lights are working properly as well as the brake lights and the indicators. Oils and liquids in the engine compartment should be also checked regularly in addition to the windshield washer reservoir.
In the meantime, MEC stressed that consumers should review the manufacturers' maintenance handbook and take care to follow the recommended schedule for maintenance particular to their vehicle's make and model.
MEC said the advisory was issued to ease the consumer’s financial burdens and help them be safe and secure.
