A search committee formed for appointing the chief and other commissioners of the new Election Commission (EC) has submitted a list of 10 persons to Bangladesh President Abdul Hamid.
The six-member search committee, headed by Supreme Court Judge Syed Mahmud Hossain, finalised the list from the names recommended by political parties.
Abdul Wadud, additional secretary of the cabinet division, told journalists after the meeting that a gazette notification will be issued by February 8 in this regard.
The list has been kept a closely-guarded secret till the notification is issued as it might trigger political controversy, said a senior official requesting anonymity.
The president will seek Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s endorsement before formal announcement of the names, he added.
The timeframe of the search committee will expire on February 8 while the tenure of the incumbent election commission will end in the middle of this month.
Headed by Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, the search panel includes High Court judge Justice Obaidul Hassan, Bangladesh Public Service Commission chairman Muhammed Sadique, Comptroller and Auditor General Masud Ahmed, Transparency International Bangladesh trustee and board member Prof Syed Manzoorul Islam and Chittagong University pro-vice chancellor Shireen Akhter.
