Prominent Indian expatriate and CEO of Doha Bank Dr R Seetharaman has been selected for the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman 2016, the highest honour conferred on overseas Indians.
In his Facebook post, Indian ambassador Periasamy Kumaran announced Seetharaman’s selection for the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman, which is conferred on the awardee by the President of India.
The award will be given away by India’s President Pranab Kumar Mukherji at the concluding ceremony of the two-day Pravasi Bhatiya Diwas (PBD) celebrations in the southern Indian city of Bengaluru tomorrow.
Kumaran termed Seetharaman’s achievement as “a great honour and recognition to the Indians in Qatar”.
Seetharaman, who has won a large number of accolades over the past 15 years in different areas, has been in Qatar, since 2002 when he joined Doha Bank at a senior level, after stints in two different banks in the GCC region.
The bank recorded enormous growth under his stewardship and expanded its operations to some 12 countries.
While acknowledging the latest recognition, Seetharaman thanked the country’s residents for their overwhelming support to his professional and community activities.
Indians from more than 100 countries across the world are attending the annual two-day celebrations, where a number of Indian ministers, top Indian professionals, senior Indian bureaucrats and a large number of NRIs are present.
Apart from Kumaran, the former ambassador to Qatar, Deepa Gopalan Wadhwa, and CK Menon, the first recipient of the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman from Qatar, also congratulated Seetharaman for his achievement.
While Wadhwa described the award as “a long awaited recognition”, Menon said “Seetharaman richly deserved it”.
A large number of members of Doha’s Indian community also lauded his achievement.
A prominent personality in the banking industry throughout the Middle East, Seetharaman is an economic expert who has achieved remarkable success for his contributions to banking, trade, investment, economics, environment, social responsibility, philanthropy and charity. He is also a regular contributor on economic issues to leading media outlets around the world.
A gold medallist while graduating in bachelors in commerce, Seetharaman is a chartered accountant and holds certificate in IT systems and corporate management.
