James Davon scored a game-high 35 points as El Jaish romped to a 92-70 win over Al Khor in the Qatar Men’s League yesterday.
In a match that started on an even note but concluded in one-sided fashion, Davon was undoubtedly the star as he constantly proved to be a pain for the Al Khor defence.
El Jaish led by just one point (9-8) in the first five minutes, and by the time the first quarter ended they were ahead 22-16, by no means an imposing advantage in a basketball game.
But although Al Khor just about stayed within touching distance, trailing by just seven points at the half-way mark (42-35), the contest took a dramatic turn in the third quarter.
Davon, with support from Hani Abil Mona (17) and Leon Macklin (16) ensured a big lead for El Jaish as the Al Khor defence began to falter time and again.
As a result, El Jaish managed a whopping 29 points in the third quarter, while restricting their rivals to just 16.
That gave El Jaish a massive 71-51 advantage going into the final 10 minutes, a position from where they were not going to let matters slip, eventually outscoring their rivals by 22 points.
Davon played for nearly 35 minutes and struck four times from the three-point mark. El Jaish also excelled with second chance points, scoring 14 of them while Al Khor had just five. After the first five minutes of the final quarter, El Jaish held a massive 86-56 lead before they eased up a bit to allow Al Khor get somewhat close.
Rickey Young was the top scorer for Al Khor with 25 points, while Alen Hadzibegovic and Gary Layton had 16 and 15, respectively.
