Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus has vacated his residence located in the Grameen Bank Complex nearly six years after his removal as the bank’s managing director.
Yunus left the place where he lived for 30 years, Yunus Centre general manager Amir Khashru said in a Facebook post.
Khashru also posted some photos of the Nobel Peace Prize winner taken during his
departure.
Bangladesh Bank removed Yunus from the bank on March 2, 2011 on ground of crossing the official age limit. Yunus had challenged his dismissal in the top court but lost.
His’s relationship with the government has been shaky since, even leading to heated exchanges at times.
Former Chittagong University professor Yunus had been the managing director of Grameen Bank since its inception in the 1980s. He received his Nobel Prize in 2006 for his work.
Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith has complained that the government has been unable to take any decision regarding Grameen Bank because of Yunus, even after his removal. The government currently holds a 30% stake in Grameen Bank.
The multi-storeyed Grameen Bank Complex is at Mirpur-2. It also houses the Yunus Centre, an organisation named after the bank’s founding managing
director.
Khashru wrote in the Facebook post: “Professor Muhammad Yunus had been living in Grameen Bank Complex for the past 30 years. He nurtured Grameen Bank just like his own child. Even when he was abroad his presence always lingered here.
“He had decided to shift long ago but had retreated on requests from Grameen family. But we couldn’t keep him any longer. Today he shifted to his new residence leaving us all in tears,” he added.
Yesterday, Grameen Bank officials told newsmen that Yunus had left the Grameen Bank Complex. He also delivered a speech at a small programme on the
occasion.
Most of the furniture in the residence was supplied by Grameen Bank, said a worker. “He bought only a few of the pieces himself and took those with him.”
